🌻 Wichita Weekly (12/19)

Well, this is a bit awkward...

Good morning, Wichita!

Well, this is a bit awkward… I’ve lost access to all Wichita news sources!

I am traveling internationally and won’t be back home until the second week of January. Where I am has some tight internet controls, and some US news sources are blocked.

I knew this, but I assumed local Wichita news sites would be accessible — that is not the case!

So, for this week, I am going to take some risk and ask you to reply to this email! See the blue section below for more on that — I will then use those responses in next week’s email given I will still be dealing with internet constraints.

For those that joined The Wichita Weekly in the last week (almost 200 of you — which is a record — thank you!), you can see what a standard Thursday email looks like here (12/12) and what a Wichita History email looks like here (the Wichita Castle).

This Week’s Poll

Have you left Wichita in the last 90 days?

If so, let me know where you went! You can add a response after clicking an option below!

Last Week’s Poll Results

  • Question: Have you been sick in the last 30 days?

  • Results: Almost 70% of you have been healthy! That is great to hear — though I am jealous. My family is all doing better now, fortunately.

  • Reader Responses / Comments:

    • “A lot of colds and COVID going around. It’s hard to tell the difference.”

    • “My baby and I had a sinus cold!”

Shoutouts

I have no new shoutouts to share this week!

Hopefully we can change that for next week — Scroll down to the golden box — all it takes is referring two locals! It helps me grow, too, so thank you!

HIT “REPLY”

Local Recommendation

For next week, in place of the normal email, I would like to share recommendations that you have for others in the Wichita area.

So, please take a few minutes to hit “reply” and share a local restaurant or place to hang out that you think more people should check out, ideally with a bit of context on why you recommend it! (Weekly readers include parents with kids of all ages, retirees, working professionals, singles, married folks, and everything in between — from east to west and north to south Wichita!)

Here is my contribution / example (yours can be as short as a sentence or as long as you would like!):

Andover Central Park

I think more people should checkout Andover Central Park. It is about a mile east of Andover Road on Central, right next to the Andover Public Library.

Not only does it have a fairly incredible, well-maintained playground for kids ages 2+ (though we took our son there when he was only a year old and it was great with baby swings and playground equipment to crawl on), but there is a well maintained walking path that goes around a small lake as well if you just want to get some fresh air.

Best of all, it is completely free!

I am always surprised at how few people are there when we go — which tends to be early in the morning. We probably hit the park, even when it is cold outside (remember gloves for the little ones as the equipment can get cold on hands), at least twice a month on the weekends.

An added bonus is how close (a one minute walk) the playground is from the Andover Library. The library has a great indoor play section for little kids as well — so you can hit the playground and then hit the library before heading out for lunch!

Again, please take a couple minutes to hit “reply” and share your own recommendation to be included in next week’s email!

Sponsor

Pet Insurance

If you click on a link in this section, I am reimbursed a small amount. This helps offset my IT costs. I make no money from these emails, as the costs exceed any sponsorships. However, that is completely fine, as I started these emails to stay up-to-date on local news for my own benefit!

If the link below is interesting, you can click to learn more without any commitment whatsoever. Thank you!

Veterinary costs are up 60% over the past decade

Unexpected vet bills can be a financial burden, with some procedures costing $10,000+. Without coverage, you’d have to cover these expenses out of pocket.

Pet insurance could provide up to 90% reimbursement.

If you made it this far — thank you so much! You are the reason I write this newsletter — and it would be nothing without you.

Would you please consider sharing this newsletter?

Thanks for reading and let me know if there is anything specific you would like to see going forward!

Best,

The Wichita Weekly
